Harvey Gross, a pioneering figure in the American outerwear industry since the early 1960s, established the brand Penfield in Massachusetts in 1975. Realizing that only a select few factories were able to produce the garments that he needed to produce, Gross decided to acquire a small manufacturing plant within an old textile mill in Hudson, MA to produce Penfield's high quality clothing.

The very first collection consisted of only four key outerwear styles, all made from innovative ripstop nylon fabric, insulated with warm down, and specially quilted to hold the insulation in place. Each garment was expertly designed and manufactured by a team of dedicated craftsmen in order to withstand the diversity of the New England climate. Gross recognized and championed the strength of down-insulated outerwear for its unique and unrivalled ability to provide strong, durable warmth and protection. From there, Penfield became one of the market leaders at producing high quality outerwear embodying the new, stylish “New England” aesthetic.

Today, Penfield is available in 30 countries and caters to all enthusiasts of life in the open. It was the very New England aesthetic that helped to introduce the American outerwear look to an international market when Penfield began exporting to Japan in 1979; since then, high profile collaborations and innovative fabric developments came together with an unfaltering commitment to quality, function, and style. Because of this commitment, the brand has steadily become recognized worldwide for its high quality, stylish apparel.
